The web went from a place to just gather information to a place where you can create, share, remix, re-purpose, and pass on to other to do the same.
The platform of the internet is changing how we live and learn today.
Open-source once free is always free. Most works with any operating system you are using. With is free does not always mean that is junk and will not crash or burn. Just make sure to check the licenses when you start using an open-source because some may be in beta test where they can charge after it is released.
With tagging you think of the overall picture. You switch to an analytical mind set and think of the overall theme and forces the student to organization.
This Chapter you are introduced to multiple internet tools to use and being used by educators in the classroom.
Blogs: For an example take a look around this blog. Most blogs are done in post and not by pages but I wanted you to have an easy way for finding each chapter. On this blog you can blog about what your class did that day or the week. To improve have a student write the blog for the day/week and you can get it from the perspective of the students. You may have them write it in word or before they can post for you to look over it first.
Podcast: They are portable and able to download and take with you. They are release at certain times and anyone can make a podcast.
Wikis: A webpage that is accessible to anyone with a web browser and internet connection, also allows readers to add, edit, or change the page at anytime.
The above stood out to me because I just taught wikis was a site that the teachers always stated not to use in research papers and projects.
[edit - the above in smaller font]
Social Bookmarking: del.icio.us is an example. Social bookmarking is a website that can host all of your pages link so you can have them anywhere you go. You provide the link and a short description and some tags, you are set to go.
Photo Sharing: filckr is the most known. Your photos are private and you invite friends and family to view your photos there so you do not have to send individually out to everyone. You can even edit your photos online with some free software available.
Video Showcasing: Youtube is the most known. Have the students produce a video share it. There are other sites out there. It teaches teamwork and how the real world works. It is also a teaching tool and you can show to other students and they tend to learn more and take more interest in it.
Google Documents and OpenOffice were also introduce as an alternative to Microsoft Office.
Zohoshows.com also is an alternative.
Calendars: you have Yahoo and Google both offer calendars and you can list due dates and events and share them.
Mapping: Google Earth where you can see the world from outer space and zoom in.
3D Modeling: model images in 3D
There are plenty more out there to try the above is just a few.
NET Standard for Teachers -

The below is The graphic for this chapter in the book. I believe it is the best to express this.
